“Capital plan will benefit 21st District” PDF Print E-mail

May 20, 2009

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate approved the first massive statewide capital construction project in ten years on Wednesday, which State Sen. Dan Cronin (R-Elmhurst) said will greatly benefit the 21st District.

Cronin has been advocating for a capital program, noting that he is aware of the need for a statewide road and school construction plan which will help his district and the state as a whole.

“These projects will go to improve safety, reduce gridlock on our roads, maintain our bridges, increase funding for schools—the College of DuPage is set to receive more than $25 million and Elmhurst College and Midwestern University have each been allocated around $4 million,” Cronin said. “These are important projects that will benefit our community, in addition to the thousands of projects across Illinois that will create jobs and encourage development.”

Cronin bill targets performance-enhancing drug use PDF Print E-mail

May 19, 2009

The General Assembly has approved House Bill 272, which requires the Illinois High School Association to randomly test student athletes for performance-enhancing substances.

Cronin was a sponsor of the measure, which he explained is an attempt to deter the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs by high school athletes.

“Though the public may not realize it, this is a problem in many schools. Many kids feel so much pressure to excel and succeed that they turn to steroids or other drugs as a way to bulk up and increase stamina. Unfortunately, we know that performance-enhancing drugs can have a devastating impact on a teenager’s mental and physical health,” Cronin said. “This legislation is a way to send the message that use of these drugs won’t be tolerated.”

Senate considers “pay-to-play” reforms following public, media pressure

Springfield, Ill. – Following intense public and media criticism, Senate President Emil Jones (D-Chicago) allowed Senate lawmakers to return to Springfield on September 22, and override Governor Blagojevich’s veto of long-awaited “pay-to-play reforms.”

Senator Cronin voted to concur with the House’s override of substantial, controversial changes made to House Bill 824 by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

“This legislation is the product of over a year of negotiations between lawmakers from both parties, and a great step forward for Illinois,” said Cronin. “Considering the dysfunction of the last few years—which has made it very difficult to pass important, worthwhile legislation—I’m glad that this is one bill that made it through the process.
